The
word “SIFER” stems from the ancient Arabic word “Sifr” meaning a method of transforming a text in order to conceal it’s meaning.
The music of SIFER, led by female vocalist Aimee Gelinas, blends original heavy rock with metal and tribal influences.
The band first began with guitarist Dan and vocalist Aimee writing music in the mountains of the Berkshires in 1999. Chris
was next to join a year later adding the Bass guitar with final member, Evan on drums completing the band in 2002. Having
cycled through several names such as Mindset and Ritual, the band came across “Sifer” in a bit of an epiphany this winter.
The word not only described the deep meaning of the music and the lyrics but also spoke true to the many influences the music
portrays. Not one single word can sum up the elements that make up Sifer.
Sifer has played in many venues throughout
Western Mass including The Contemporary Arts Center in North Adams, Hells Angels Club in Lee, The Crossroads in Pittsfield,
The Waterfront in Springfield, Berkshire Community College, the Crown Plaza’s Tavern “Muddy McGee’s” in Pittsfield as well
as various other locations throughout the Berkshires. The band is currently wrapping up a CD recorded in Great Barrington,
MA called “Divinity or Demise”.
Band Member Bios:
Aimee Gelinas: Lead vocalist, lyricist, and Tribal percussionist.
Aimee’s lyrics reflect on both the dark and light aspects of life such as in the song “ I’ll be your God”. Her powerful alto
vocal style mixed with original lyrics and unique melodies make her a strong lead vocalist. She has been singing and playing
percussion (Djembe/Conga) professionally for 12 years. Having traveled extensively around the world to learn voice and drumming,
she also co-founded a vocal percussion ensemble called Gaia Roots (www.gaiaroots.com).
Dan Cohen: Guitarist. Dan
has been playing both electric and acoustic guitar for 15 years having played in many heavy metal/hard rock bands until founding
Sifer in 1999. He develops the foundation of Sifer’s music on guitar while unleashing powerful solos such as in “Back to
the Earth”. He draws on influences from Metal, Rock and Grunge while maintaining a unique sound of his own.
Chris
Samson: Bassist. Chris has been playing bass, guitar, and percussion for over 6 years. He writes and develops his bass lines
fusing his influences of rock and heavy metal into a unique sound that brings melody and a heavy punch to his bass lines.
He wrote the foundation of the song “Need to Live” back in the late nineties making it one of Sifer’s very first written and
recorded songs.
Evan Bates: Drummer, Percussionist, Lyricist, and Artist. Evan has been playing drums since “birth”
having grown up with his father as a professional drummer. His solid drumming creates the backbone of Sifer’s music adding
heavy metal influenced sounds such as the double bass. He is a talented professional Tattoo Artist and creates all of Sifer’s
artwork designs. His lyrics appear in the song “Remains”
